EGG CASING
The egg looks like a sparking styrofoam sculpture
Top view of case, you can see the hardened foam that originated in the female mantids abdomen, impressive eh?
From the side, looks like a piece of art to me

HATCHING
A close up as they hatched. I waited and waited and one morning, the egg case had burst open!
Another close up of their little identical brown backs lined with light green sides
Here you can see the egg casing opening in its entirety as the baby mantids squeeze out
Profile of hte hatching, as they are already praying
Just crazy looking, they were too small for my iphone video camera as I did not have my macro jelly lens yet.
Eeks, mantid cannibalism right at birth!

NEWLY HATCHED
This one's jaws look like a bird beak
Ha, this one could laugh it would be an evil Bela Lugosi chuckle.... mwwuuhahahaa
Pretty cool how they hatch as exact miniatures of the adults, except for coloring. See how the colored stripe continues right throught its eyeballs?!
This little guy looks totally taken by surprise
With this odd lighting the eyes look more like goggles
Holy spooky baby mantid...
Two new hatchlings shadow boxing
See how tiny they are! The netting of the cage is pretty fine.
This one wants to be a rapper when it grows up

ADULTS
Hullo
I say...
From the front, kind of eerie with that huge split in the back
Pretty cool how they shed these exoskeletons, which still look like real insects, just ones that need a long drink.
A potential prey spotting?
LWho's back there..?
Traipsing through the shrubbery
I am mantid, fearedsome looking killer, especially in this light and cool backdrop
Not. Amused.
Do you hear what I hear..?
Full body shot
